Imaging tests, typically CT scans and ultrasounds, are also used to help identify the nature and severity of the hernia. These tests help pinpoint the hernia’s location, confirm its type and size, and help in planning treatment. Three basic types of surgery are performed to address concerns with hernias:

• Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery – Small hernias can be addressed using this form of minimally invasive surgery. Small incisions are made to provide access to the affected area. A laparoscope will allow Dr. Nurick to see where he’s working, and small tools can be passed through the incisions.
• Robot-assisted Hernia Surgery – Similar to laparoscopic surgery, this procedure uses the assistance of a surgical robot when more complex treatments are needed.
• Component Separation – When a large abdominal wall hernia is present, component separation may be needed to address them. The muscles of the abdominal walls will be rearranged to eliminate the weak point where the hernia formed. This treatment is often effective at limiting the recurrence of complex hernias.
